Gunnera; Gunnera Manicata:
It’s not called giant rhubarb for nothing.
They are huge, have really prickly stems and leaves and when they die back in winter you have to clear up 5ft wide rotting leaves! A few years ago there was a fashion for these plants, but unless you own a large lake and several acres don’t buy one.
So there are other plants just as nice with great big leaves, Darmera Peltata Nana, Ligularia (liked by slugs unfortunately) and some really big hostas to choose from instead.
We haven’t used Gunnera in any of our small garden designs – but we do use lots of other plants that are much better (we think).
