Fig trees grow fast and produce lots of large leaves – which all fall off in the Autumn. The branches can grow several feet in a year, a bit like thick vines.
On top of that if the figs grow out of reach then they ripen and drop like big pink fig bombs. The other speciality with fig fruit is that the wasps love drinking the juice, but it makes them drunk and they fall out of the tree onto the floor, quickly sober up and fly right back in again for some more!
To grow Fig successfully it needs to have a restricted root run, then it thinks -‘Oh cripes, no space to grow, I’m going to die, I’d better produce lots of fruit to ensure our survival’ The benefit, you get a more manageable tree that has lots of figs that you can easily reach.
