Citrus trees; Lemons, Kumquats, Limes and Orange trees look great in the garden centres – and they have fruit too. So you buy one and bring it home, then all the leaves drop off, the fruit never forms and it ends up with red spider mite (usually) – and you didn’t know about the thorns!
However, citrus can produce fruit in the UK and can be a good houseplant/patio plant for the summer if you water well (rainwater only), feed regularly, prune correctly, ensure plenty of hot sunshine, no cold wet winters and you trim off all the thorns with nail scissors.
So if you can grow citrus and get it to bear fruit…by the way mine has 14 lemons on as we speak (smug satisfaction…!) then you will have a talking point and create hugely jealous looks as your slice your home grown lemon into your Gin. It just takes a lot of work to be able to get ‘one over the Jones’!
We haven’t used Citrus in any of our small garden designs – but we do use lots of other plants that are much better (we think).
Why don’t you take a look
