Salix; Willow:

 

Willows come in all shapes and sizes from majestic trees to smaller shrubs, many have gorgeous coloured stems too. So they can be great garden plants, you can weave wigwams with them, have winter colour and lovely weeping shapes…but they also produce loads of catkins which they love to drop.

 

They need proper pruning every year, they will root and can spread by underground suckers and their roots seek out water – so sewers beware!

 

 We haven’t used willow in any of our small garden designs – but we do use lots of other plants that are much better (we think).
