These are great shrubs for attracting butterflies, the main problem is that they need hard pruning to remain manageable and attractive looking. Most specimens you see aren’t hacked back enough and they end up as giant thugs instead, and all the nice flowerheads end up 10ft up in the air where you can’t see them properly.
So cut the new growth right back to a few cm’s from the old wood each year in spring if you want nice looking buddleias. Or don’t choose them for a smallish garden.
We haven’t used Buddleja in any of our small garden designs – but we do use lots of other plants that are much better (we think).
