The main problem with conifer hedges is that they are big dense green walls, so you won’t get anything else to grow well near them.

 

If you want a conifer hedge then you need to trim it twice a year to avoid this look in a few years time. The general rule is cut more off the top and less off the sides.

Never cut into the old wood, it won’t grow back. Only trim the green growth.

 

We haven’t used Conifers in any of our small garden designs – but we do use lots of other plants that are much better (we think).
