Clematis Montana’s are very commonly sold clematis, but unless you have a really large space you really don’t want these.
Clematis are lovely plants, but Montana’s usually grow fast and big. If not properly cut back (which you do just after it has finished flowering in Spring) you end up with a heavy matted mass of stems which looks pretty ugly for much of the year.
If you have a small trellis or arch use Alpine clematis or choose ones that only grow to 6-8 feet tall.
We haven’t used C Montana in any of our small garden designs – but we do use lots of other plants that are much better (we think).
